Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Smoking Pipes from Aristocob

I’ve been a pipe smoker since 1978, and I started smoking corn cob pipes in those early days due to their low price. Over the years I spent more and more on briar pipes only to find myself returning to the lowly cob. Fast-forward all these years later and Ive finally come to terms with the fact that I, like Samuel Clemens (AKA Mark Twain) don’t care what the snobs say; I’m a proud smoker of corn cob pipes. In this video I’m sharing some of the famous Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipes that my bride and I retail on our web site. @Aristocob How did you go about braking in your corn cob, did you start with a full bowl and just smoke it, or did you start out with a third of the bowl and work your way up to a full bowl so that you start the carbon cake from the bottom up?

  2. Aristocob Says:

@cber8860 It’s normal, which is why it’s called a “bit”. That said, there’s no need to gnaw on them. If you find that you just can’t stop yourself there are a couple options. You can add a rubber thing to the bit called a “Softy”. The other option is to get one of the Arte armed bits made of acrylic, which will set you back more than the pipe itself.

@Aristocob are getting teeth marks in the bits bad or is it normal

  4. Aristocob Says:

@cber8860 As Uncle Bob said in That Thing You Do: “Luke 21:19″.

@nuck81 Whoops, I missed your comment until just now. It’s your call, but I would use a pocket knife to chip or scrape the glue off. It would pop off easily. Scott

I’m a beginning pipe smoker that started on a briar but just bought my First Missouri Meerschaum cob. There is a huge glob of glue sitting on the very top of the Rim, and there is a lot of wood sticking out from the shank into the bowl. Are these normal and should I worry about that big glob of glue? Thanks

Y@bullettoothburrows Yrs. In fact I even did a video on the topic. We now sell exclusively through our web site: Aristocob(dot)com. Check it out. Scott

Have you stopped selling on ebay?

@RationalDischarge Sorry for the slow reply; I’ve been out of town in an area that apparently hasn’t learned about the interwebs. I know of very few tobacco pipe smokers who use screens in their pipes. That said it would be tough to deal with a screen in a MacArthur pipe. Also, when you pack your pipe the tobacco is near the top, so it’s easy to light. If it goes out you’ll need to tap the loose ash out and use a Bic-style lighter with the flame set high. Hope this helps, Scott

  13. RationalDischarge Says:

I’d love to get one of those big MacArthurs, but I’m wondering, how do you even get your match/lighter all the way down in there? Also, how deeply do you place your screens in the bowl?

@Aristocob Yeah, I crimp and gnaw holes in the stems pretty quickly, and it’s difficult to get a cleaner down the bent ones, because they are sharply bent. My local store sometimes gets those Chinese knock off, and while the bowls will generally burst into the flames first smoke, the stems are fantastic, last forever, and the bent ones are gently curved so a cleaners goes in easily. Almost worth buying them just for the stems (which fit MM too). MM should take stem making lessons from them.

That’s a good question. If you look at the prices on our Aristocob website, our prices are below the Manufacturers Suggested Retail price. Most brick and mortar stores will charge retail, while some, like convenient stores and specialty tobacco stores may care much more. I’ve seen crappy Chinese knock-offs of Missouri Meerschaum pipes priced at TWICE our price. Buyer beware, I suppose.
